Onam 2007 Pics

Thekkummuri Desa Kummatti Maholsav, believed to be more than 100 years' old, will be held at Kizhakkumpattukara, east of the town, on Sunday.

The procession featuring the Kummattis will be flagged off at the Thaikkattumana Vettakkorumakan temple at 1 p.m. It will wind through Kizhakkumpattukara Vadakkumuri (3 p.m.), Nallankara (4 p.m.), Moosepet Road (5 p.m.), Chelakkattukara (6 p.m.) and return to the temple at 7 p.m.

The festival features three 63-year-old wooden Kummatti masks -- of Kiratam, Thalla and Hanuman -- claimed to be among the oldest in these parts. According to the Desa Kummatti committee, these are among the best Kummatti masks ever crafted in wood, and have been painstakingly preserved.

The masks were crafted at the initiative of Karapurathu Raman Nair, Karapurathu Govindan, Kutty Nair, Karapurathu Madhavan Nair and Viswanathan Achari.

Traditionally, the people of Kizhakkumpattukara Thekkumuri, Vadakkumuri and Nallankara stage Kummatti on Moonnam Onam day, and those of Chelakkattukara and Ancheri on Nalam Onam day.

In 1935, metal masks were crafted for the Kizhakkumpattukara fete. "They must have been heavy for the dancers. So, in 1941, they were replaced by wooden masks,'' says an organiser.

In 1959, `Chetti Vadyam' (ensemble) was introduced into the procession. A few years later, western bands too were included.

Right from its inception, the Kizhakkumpattukara festival has been patronised by the Pazhanellipurathu Thaikkattu Mana.
